How to Void a Check Correctly

Step 1: Use Large Letters

Write "VOID" in large letters across the front of the check. Make sure it's large enough to be clearly visible but doesn't obscure the check number or banking information.

Step 2: Cover Key Areas

Write "VOID" across these five key areas:

  • Payee line
  • Amount box
  • Amount line
  • Signature line
  • Center of check

Step 3: Use the Right Tool

Use a blue or black permanent marker or pen. Don't use pencil or erasable ink.
